Seeds
A program for our littlest learners.
Our SEEDS program is a 33-week program on Tuesdays OR Thursdays designed for children 5 years of age as preparation for and complement to the Alveary curriculum. Our program consists of a fluid combination of short lessons, free play, ample time out-of-doors, and care for the classroom. Each day’s schedule is designed to allow for Mentor-directed lessons as well as open-ended free play, keeping in mind both the mental load and learning modality required. During lessons we use Living Books to cover Bible, Science, History, Geography, and Literature, with topics of study directed by our natural surroundings and seasonal changes throughout the year. The scope of these books come from our spine curriculum entitled, Exploring Nature with Children. Lessons also include poetry, music instruction and appreciation, artist study, and handicraft, which are drawn from the Alveary curriculum as much as possible to allow for consistency with our 1st - 8th grade program.
Free play activities are designed to develop observation, creativity, interpersonal, literacy, problem solving, fine motor, visual-spatial, and logical-mathematical skills. Time out-of-doors includes exploration, nature study based on the day’s nature topic, movement and play. Students are given responsibilities in the classroom through regular habits of neatness and care for our space, including keeping personal items neatly organized, watering classroom plants, spraying and wiping the tables after snack time, setting up and putting away floor blankets and pillows for quiet time, cleaning up after free play, and sweeping throughout the day when needed.
Below is a sample schedule of the morning and here is a sample lesson plan.
