what we have been learning:

Mrs. Kvale’s Class:
In Seeds, we have been learning about and identifying animal tracks. On our nature walks, we’ve taken advantage of the snow and mud to discover evidence of many deer, along with a few dogs and squirrels.

Our reading adventures have included the true story of an expedition to the South Pole—full of peril but with a happy ending. Ask your Seeds student to tell you about the life of an Emperor penguin or the brave men who slid down an ice mountain to find help for their friends.

Mrs. Ritzel’s Class:
Our first-grade students have been learning about prairie animals and how to draw them using basic shapes. They’ve also had fun creating clay maps and teepees!

Mrs. Snyder’s Class:
Our 2nd and 3rd-grade students have been busy working on Paper Sloyd. Paper Sloyd is considered preparation for woodwork and sewing in the upper grades. It involves paper folding similar to origami but requires more measuring, cutting, and gluing. The models are simple yet useful, and each can be completed within one class period. Students love making these practical creations, which can be used at home or given as gifts.

Mrs. Werkheiser’s Class:Our students have just finished reading Buzztail and Leaper, a science story about the lives of a rattlesnake and a salmon. We wrapped up our reading by diving deeper—literally—through a fish dissection!

Miss Bennett’s Class: We have a lot going on! On Tuesdays, we're learning about Marco Polo’s travels in Cathay and European settlers like John Cabot and Christopher Columbus. In Natural History, we’re exploring bats and their caves, while in Literature, we’re wrapping up Hamlet, which the students have loved. In General Science, we’ve been studying robotic mechanisms used to track storms and recently built walking robots, finishing with a robot race!

Mrs. Trippeer’s Class: Recently our oldest students were able to get a hands-on look at the structure of a healthy heart. We closely examined and then dissected sheep hearts in pairs. The students were fascinated as they identified the arteries and veins, and we were able to see the chambers of the heart they were connected to. Most were amazed by just how thick and strong the heart muscle really is.

Exam Week: We will administer second-term exams on Tuesday, March 4, and Thursday, March 6.
